What is a Mental Health Condition?

1 in 4

UK adults are estimated to experience a mental health condition in any given year.*

Mental health conditions involve persistent or recurring changes in mood, thought, or behavior that impact daily life. Although standard treatments or therapies help many, for others they simply aren’t enough.

Alternative treatments are considered by specialists as part of a wider, clinically supervised treatment plan - used alongside, not instead of, your existing care.

FAQs

Can I use alternative treatments if I have a history of mental illness?

Alternative treatments can be prescribed to help manage certain mental health conditions like anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. However, there are strict safety boundaries in place to protect your health. If you have a history of psychosis or schizophrenia, we won’t prescribe to you. Our specialist doctors look at your full medical history during your initial consultation to ensure your complete safety.

Can alternative treatments be prescribed for mental health conditions?

Yes. In the UK, a specialist doctor can prescribe alternative treatment for some mental health conditions when there’s an unmet clinical need. This could be because conventional treatments haven’t worked, or have caused unwanted side effects.

Which mental health conditions can qualify for alternative treatment?

Some mental health conditions our specialists may prescribe for include anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD and insomnia. You’ll need a diagnosis of a qualifying condition, and to have tried at least two different conventional treatments first. Each person is assessed individually by a specialist.

How to know if alternative treatment is right for me?

It may be worth exploring alternative treatment if you have a diagnosed condition and conventional treatments haven’t helped, or have caused unwanted side effects.
