Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Around 5 to 8% of women of reproductive age suffer from pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder, also known as PMDD. It’s a much more severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and comes with many severe symptoms including depression, anxiety, mood swings, and lack of energy.

Unfortunately, for many, this condition can significantly affect relationships, work, and quality of life.

Conventional Treatments Options

There are a few ways to help relieve some of the symptoms of PMDD. This can include:

  • Antidepressants (SSRIs) to regulate mood
  • Hormonal treatments to suppress ovulation
  • Pain relief medicines
  • Lifestyle changes such as exercise, sleep management, and stress reduction
  • Counselling and psychological support

Although some people may find relief with a combination of the above, for others it simply isn’t enough.
